Not that kind of lucky either...
There is this one stretch of freeway that tends to back up and traffic has to go from full cruising speed to a dead stop. Every time it happens I say a little prayer of “please God don’t let me get rear ended”.
Well for the second time in my career of making that commute there was a pretty solid three or four car pile up a few vehicles behind me in my lane. Then the guy in the front of the pile up takes off for reasons I can only speculate as probably being an undocumented immigrant, no license or insurance, etc. etc.
I love cars and driving but this was one of those reminders that shit can get real out there. I was happy to read the CHP incident report that it was a minor injury accident and that I made it home safely.

I’m only 18 so haven’t been driving for too long. I’ve had three times now where I don’t know how I avoided a rather serious accident (Florida would’ve blamed me for two of them because it’s a no fault state but I have a dashcam and would try and fight it)
Anyway, our passion is honestly dangerous. And there have been plenty of times I hate having it. I’ve lost many people close to me by cars and car accidents.
I bounce back but it’s always in the back of my mind.

I always get nervous when I’m the last car in a line of stopped traffic on a freeway or high-speed limit road. Here in San Antonio we have a lot of 3-4 lane per side roads with 55 and 65 MPH speed limits that have traffic lights on them. I got rear-ended a few years ago when I was the last car in line at a red light on a 55 MPH road, just because the driver wasn’t expecting the line of cars to be that long and didn’t have time to slow all the way from 60+ (probably was still going over 20 when they hit me - enough to push me into the car in front of me and completely demolish their front end. Coolant was all over the road and the front end had pretty much collapsed. I got out of it with just a new tailgate, bumper and a few trips to the chiropractor.) So now I’m just like you - whenever I’m that last car there I say a little prayer and tap my fingers nervously on the wheel until that next car coming has stopped. I haven’t seen another accident recently, but a lot of squealing tires and cars diving onto medians/shoulders as they reach the backup.

I’ve had situations where someone has done tat to me and just barely dove into the shoulder in time.

Shit like this is the reason why I lost my Cadillac.
I still act paranoid and look in the rear view in anticipation and fright during these situations.

Leaving space, lots of it, like way more than you think is necessary between you and the car in front of you really cuts down on stuff like this happening. It may not be as fun, but after a while it becomes really relaxing because almost all the “close calls” end up disappearing.
I used to think everyone else was a bad driver. Then I slowed down and kept ample space between me and the next car. Now pretty much everyone seems fine. (Assholes not included, they still suck)
